Sankranti: dates and pujas
Sankranti is the day the sun moves from one zodiac sign (rashi) into the next. It happens twelve times a year. The best known is Makar Sankranti in January, when the sun enters Capricorn and days begin to grow longer.
Why people observe Sankranti
On Sankranti, families take a holy dip, offer prayers to Surya, the sun god, and give food, clothes and sesame to those in need. Makar Sankranti is also a harvest festival, celebrated as Pongal, Lohri and Bihu in different regions.
