Amavasya: dates and pujas

Amavasya is the new moon day. It is the last day of the dark half (Krishna Paksha) of each Hindu lunar month, so it comes once a month. Mahalaya Amavasya, at the end of Pitru Paksha, and Kartik Amavasya, when Diwali falls, are among the most important.

Why people observe Amavasya

Amavasya is traditionally the day to remember and honour ancestors. Families offer water and sesame (tarpan), perform shraddha and pray for the peace of departed souls. Many also keep it as a quiet day for prayer and charity.
